The Second Spanish Period in the Two Floridas. In The history of Florida.
essay, University Press of Florida.
Focus Questions:
(1)
Who are the authors? Susan Richbourg Parker and William Coker
(5) Identify and discuss the issue of “perspective” with
regards to Anglo writings of Spanish Government
The perspective of the Anglo writing of the Spanish Government
as “the inevitable result of the defective character of the Spaniards
themselves”. Meaning they were disrespected and not cared for by their own
government and gave no support to them. To be honest, I believe that if my
government didn’t like or respect or care about me, why would I want to be a
citizen of their society.
(2)
How did Spain cede one territory and receive two
back twenty years later?
The Spanish ceded Florida to get Louisiana and Cuba. They
did this is the most strategic way and used it as leverage for more trades in
the future.
(5) Describe the two territories, their locations, capitols,
and industry & resources
Cuba had a lot of activity going on because of the ports
delivering food to East Florida. Cuba is just south of Florida and was a good
investment for the Spaniards. Cuba shipped coffee rum sugar win and tableware
all to USA
Even though the French bought Lousianna after, Spanish still
protected it. Baton Rouge is the capitol. They used the port systems to get
their industry and resources in check
(8)What are some of the turning
points for the rapid turnover of FL (Spanish/British/Spanish/U.S.)
Some turning points for rapid
turnover of Florida were the French and Indian Wars because it led to the Peace
treaty in Paris. With the Spanish trying to resolve these issues, they didn’t
help the British against the Americans, leading into the defeat of the British
and after 21 years of the British interregnum, the Spanish got back what the
British took from them.
(5) Present evidence of
Political, Social, and Economic influence/affects in Chapter 10
Some political effects were
Andrew Jackson incursions in West Florida and Gregor MacGregor in East Florida
mirroring the rebellions, revolutions, and violations of sovereign territories
in the Americas. Some Social influences was seeing the formal transfer of flags
that took place in Pensacola from the Spanish flag to the US flag. Some
economic influences are selling parcels to the public or either making them
unavailable for settlement or unacceptably expensive. Equally important was the
destruction of smaller farms, houses, barns, music, food, rifles and other
miscellaneous things.
(2)What do you find most interesting about this article?
Most interesting thing I learned about this article was that
the Spanish had to leave their house twice, once to leave from the British
attacks and then they came back yet to live for another generation or so then
give raise the American flag on their land.
